Bedrooms need three things at once: darkness when you want it, privacy at all times, and a room that is not five degrees hotter than the rest of the house by 4pm. Shutters do all three, and there is not a cord anywhere in the system. Free in-home measure and a fixed price.

  • Light control without full darkness
  • Cordless, so safe for nurseries

Bedroom shutters explained

What makes a good bedroom window covering?

A bedroom asks more of a window covering than any other room. You want it dark enough to sleep past sunrise, private enough to get dressed without thinking about it, cool enough to use in February, and quiet enough that a breeze does not wake you. Most coverings do one or two of those.

Shutters do the first three well and the fourth better than anything with fabric or slats hanging loose. Closed louvres cut most of the light and all of the sightline, and because the panel is rigid there is nothing to lift, rattle or slap against the reveal when the window is open behind it.

The honest limitation is complete blackout. A shutter is not a blackout blind - a little light comes through the gaps between the louvre and the frame, which for most people is a comfortable dim rather than a problem. If someone in the house works nights or you have a baby who wakes at first light, say so at the measure and we will talk about pairing a blockout blind behind the panels.

Why shutters in a bedroom

Why bedrooms suit shutters better than any other room

Bedrooms are where the daily difference is most obvious, because it is the room you are in when the sun comes up and when it is going down.

Cordless, and that matters

No cords, no chains, no loose fabric anywhere in the system. It is the main reason parents choose shutters over blinds for nurseries and kids' rooms, and it is a genuine safety difference rather than a marketing line.

Privacy without losing the light

Angle the louvres upward and you can see the sky, not the neighbour's window, with daylight bouncing off the ceiling. No blind gives you privacy and brightness at the same time.

Cooler west-facing rooms

A west-facing bedroom on the Coast is unusable by mid-afternoon in summer. Closed louvres stop the sun before it reaches the glass, and customers consistently report this as the biggest single change.

Airflow without exposure

Louvres tilt with the window wide open behind them, so you get the evening sea breeze through the room without opening the room up to the street.

Nothing to rattle

A rigid panel does not lift, slap or flap in a breeze. Anyone who has slept next to a venetian blind with the window open knows exactly why this matters.

They stay looking new

No fabric to fade, no cords to fray, no mechanism to replace in five years. A bedroom shutter looks the same in fifteen years as it did on install day.

Configurations

How bedroom panels are usually built

Bedroom windows are the most straightforward openings in the house, which is why they are also the most economical to shutter.

Hinged panels

The default. Panels swing open on a frame so you can reach the window, the flyscreen and the winder behind them. Two panels meeting in the middle suits most bedroom windows.

Fixed with operable louvres

For a highlight window above the bed or a window you will never need to reach through. Cheaper, cleaner, and the louvres still tilt normally.

Split tilt

Two independently tilting sections in one panel, so you can close the bottom half for privacy and leave the top open for light. Useful on a street-facing bedroom.

Shutters with a blockout blind

Where genuine darkness matters, a slimline blockout blind behind the shutter gives you both. The shutter still does the daytime work.

Right product, right bedroom

Which material for a bedroom

Bedrooms are dry, protected, internal rooms, which makes this the easiest material decision in the house.

Shutters suit these bedroom situations

  • Master bedrooms and ensuiteless rooms
  • Nurseries and children's rooms
  • Street-facing bedrooms needing privacy
  • West-facing rooms that overheat
  • Guest rooms and studies
  • Bedrooms with highlight windows

Almost every bedroom

Painted basswood is the right answer for a dry internal room. It has the warmth and finish depth that make a shutter read as joinery rather than hardware.

A bedroom with an ensuite window

The bedroom takes timber, the ensuite next to it takes waterproof PVC. Most quotes we write have both, and that is deliberate rather than inconsistent.

Need genuine blackout?

Shutters are not blackout blinds. Tell us at the measure and we will talk through pairing them so you get both, rather than discovering the difference afterwards.

Pricing

What do bedroom shutters cost?

Bedrooms are the most economical rooms in the house to shutter. Painted basswood runs roughly $450 to $700 per square metre installed, and bedroom windows are usually modest, so a single window typically lands between $600 and $1,400 and a three-bedroom house between $2,500 and $5,000.

Keeping bedrooms hinged rather than reaching for a more complicated mechanism is usually what frees up the budget to do the living areas properly. On a standard bedroom window there is nothing a track or bi-fold set buys you.

01

Window size

Priced by the square metre of panel. Most bedroom windows are between one and two square metres.

02

How many bedrooms

Three or four similar windows quoted together is more efficient than one at a time, and it is how most people do it.

03

Finish

Standard painted white sits at the accessible end. A colour match or a stain adds to it.

04

Whether you want blackout

Pairing a blockout blind behind the shutter is a second product with its own cost. Worth deciding before the quote rather than after.

Reviews

What Sunshine Coast homeowners say

Feedback from Sunshine Coast customers who've had plantation shutters measured, made and installed by us.

“Our west-facing lounge was unusable by three in the afternoon. They did timber shutters across the whole front of the house and it’s a completely different room - cooler, and the light is beautiful.”
SSarah M.Buderim
“We’re two streets from the beach so they talked us into aluminium for the alfresco and PVC in the bathrooms instead of timber. Two summers on - no swelling, no rust, no fuss.”
CCraig T.Mooloolaba
“Measured, made and installed exactly when they said. The raked window above the stairs is why we chose them - nobody else wanted to touch it.”
PPriya D.Noosaville

Care

Looking after bedroom shutters

The lowest-traffic shutters in the house. Dust is genuinely the only thing that happens to them.

  1. 1

    Dust every few weeks

A microfibre cloth or a vacuum brush head with the louvres tilted flat. On painted timber keep it dry rather than damp.

  2. 2

    Tilt from the middle

Move louvres from the centre rod or the middle of the slat, not the end. It keeps the tension even across the panel.

  3. 3

Open the panel from the stile

Swing the panel from its frame edge rather than by a louvre. Louvres are not built to carry the panel's weight.

  4. 4

    Check the hinges yearly

One turn on a loose hinge screw keeps a panel sitting square. If a panel starts to catch or drop, call us - adjustments are covered.

FAQ

Bedroom shutter questions, answered

Do plantation shutters block out enough light for a bedroom?

They block most of it but not all. Closed louvres cut the light to a comfortable dim and remove the sightline completely, which is enough for most people to sleep past sunrise. A little light still comes through the gaps between louvre and frame, so if you need genuine blackout we would pair the shutters with a blockout blind behind them.

Are plantation shutters safe for a nursery?

Yes, and it is the main reason parents choose them over blinds. There are no cords, no chains and no loose fabric anywhere in the system, so there is nothing for a child to pull or become tangled in. Blind cords remain one of the most common household hazards for small children, and shutters remove the problem entirely rather than managing it.

Will shutters make a west-facing bedroom cooler?

Noticeably, and it is the change customers mention most. Closed louvres stop direct sun before it reaches the glass and the closed panel creates an insulating air gap at the window. A west-facing Sunshine Coast bedroom that was unusable by mid-afternoon becomes a room you can actually be in.

Can I have privacy and still let light in?

Yes, and this is what shutters do better than anything else. Angle the louvres upward and daylight bounces off the ceiling while the sightline from outside is completely blocked. A blind gives you privacy only by giving up the light.

Will shutters rattle if I sleep with the window open?

No. The panel is rigid and fixed in the frame, so there is nothing to lift or slap the way venetian slats and roller blinds do in a breeze. It is one of the quieter benefits and one people only appreciate after living with something that does rattle.

What is split tilt and do I need it?

Split tilt means two independently tilting sections within one panel, so you can close the bottom half for privacy and leave the top open for light. It is genuinely useful on a street-facing or close-neighbour bedroom, and unnecessary on a window facing a private back yard.

How much do bedroom shutters cost?

Painted basswood runs roughly $450 to $700 per square metre installed, so a single bedroom window typically lands between $600 and $1,400. Doing three bedrooms at once usually comes to $2,500 to $5,000 depending on window sizes.

What material should a bedroom have?

Painted basswood in almost every case. A bedroom is a dry, protected internal room, so there is no exposure argument for anything else, and timber has the warmth and depth of finish that makes a shutter look like joinery. The exception is an ensuite window, which takes waterproof PVC.

How long from measure to installation?

Typically four to six weeks, the same as the rest of the range. Panels are made to your exact measurements, so there is a manufacturing window. We confirm the install date at measure-up and the same team that measured does the fit.
