Fixed with operable louvres
The frame stays put and only the louvres tilt. Ideal above a bath or vanity where you will never need the panel itself to open, and the most economical option.
The one room where the wrong shutter fails fastest. Waterproof panels for bathrooms, ensuites, laundries and poolside windows - steam, splash and humidity make no difference to them, and they wipe clean with a cloth. Free in-home measure and a fixed price.
Bathroom shutters explained
A bathroom is the harshest environment in the house for a window covering. A hot shower in a small ensuite is a full humidity cycle twice a day, every day, and on the Sunshine Coast that sits on top of a climate that is already humid for half the year. Most window coverings are simply not built for it.
What makes a shutter suitable is having no timber anywhere in the panel. A painted timber shutter survives moisture only while its coating stays perfect - one chip on a louvre edge and water reaches the wood, which swells, lifts the paint further and eventually stops the louvre sitting flat. Solid PVC has no such failure point, because there is nothing inside it that reacts to water.
The second thing is hardware. Hinges, pins and fasteners are what fail first in a wet room if they are the wrong specification, and a single rusting screw will stain a white panel and seize a hinge. Stainless throughout is not an upgrade in a bathroom, it is the minimum.

Why shutters in a bathroom
Bathrooms are where fabric and timber both lose. This is what a waterproof shutter does that the alternatives cannot.
Nothing in the panel absorbs moisture, so nothing swells, lifts or stops closing properly. The shutter that fitted in winter still fits after a summer of hot showers.
Angle the louvres down and you get complete privacy at eye level with daylight still coming in over the top. That is the thing frosted glass and roller blinds cannot do.
A damp cloth along the louvres and it is done. No soft-cloth rule, no worrying about water on a painted edge, no touch-up paint in the cupboard for chipped slats.
Non-porous sealed surfaces with no grain and no fabric. There is nothing for mould to establish in, which matters in an ensuite that does not get much airflow.
Louvres tilt with the window wide open behind them, so the room clears after a shower without giving the neighbours a view in.
Quality PVC is UV-stabilised through the material rather than coated on the surface. The cheap plastic blinds people usually put in a north-facing bathroom yellow within a couple of summers. These do not.
Configurations
Wet-area windows are usually small, high or awkwardly placed over a bath or vanity. How the panel opens decides whether you can actually reach it.
The frame stays put and only the louvres tilt. Ideal above a bath or vanity where you will never need the panel itself to open, and the most economical option.
Panels swing open on a frame so you can reach the window behind to open it or clean it. The standard for a bathroom window you can actually stand in front of.
Panels fold back on themselves for wide laundry windows and servery-style openings where a swinging panel would foul a bench.
Panels glide aside rather than swinging. The answer for poolside sliding doors and any wet-area opening with no clearance to swing.
Right product, right room
PVC is the correct answer in a handful of rooms and the wrong one in most of the house. We would rather tell you that at the measure than sell you one product everywhere.
In the dry rooms of the house timber has a depth of finish PVC does not match. If the room is dry there is no reason to compromise on it.
See timber shuttersA window that gets splash is fine in PVC. An opening that gets direct sun, rain and salt air needs powder-coated aluminium instead.
See aluminium shuttersEven with reinforced stiles, PVC has a practical span limit before extra stiles start breaking up the view. We will tell you where that line is.

Your panels are built to your measurements, then fitted and adjusted on site. Most Sunshine Coast homes are installed 4-6 weeks after measure-up.
Pricing
Waterproof PVC runs roughly $350 to $550 per square metre installed, the most economical material in the range. Bathroom windows also tend to be small, so a single ensuite window often lands between $400 and $900 and a whole house of wet areas between $1,200 and $2,500.
Small windows do look expensive per square metre, and that is worth understanding rather than being surprised by. There is a floor on what any panel costs to build - the frame, hinges, tilt mechanism and the labour to measure and fit it are much the same on a half-square-metre bathroom window as on a large one.

Priced by the square metre. Three small ensuite windows can come in under one large laundry window.
Fixed panels with operable louvres are the most economical and are usually right above a bath. Hinged costs a little more and lets you reach the glass.
Taller and wider panels need a concealed aluminium insert through the stiles to stay flat. Not optional on a full-height laundry panel.
Windows over a bath, behind a vanity or high in a shower recess take longer to fit square, and that is where the install time goes.
Reviews
Feedback from Sunshine Coast customers who've had plantation shutters measured, made and installed by us.
“Our west-facing lounge was unusable by three in the afternoon. They did timber shutters across the whole front of the house and it’s a completely different room - cooler, and the light is beautiful.”
“We’re two streets from the beach so they talked us into aluminium for the alfresco and PVC in the bathrooms instead of timber. Two summers on - no swelling, no rust, no fuss.”
“Measured, made and installed exactly when they said. The raked window above the stairs is why we chose them - nobody else wanted to touch it.”
Care
The easiest product in the range to live with. There is no finish to protect, so you can clean them the way you clean the rest of the room.
Wipe the louvres down with a damp cloth. Unlike timber there is no rule about standing water and no risk of lifting a finish.
Warm water and dish soap shifts soap scum and hairspray residue. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent-based cleaners, which dull the surface.
Move louvres from the centre of the slat rather than the ends. It keeps the tension pins even across the panel.
Tilting the louvres open helps the room clear faster. Good for the window reveal and the walls, not just the shutter.
FAQ
Yes, provided they are waterproof PVC rather than timber. Solid PVC panels have no timber core anywhere for moisture to reach, so steam, splash and humidity make no difference to them. Timber shutters in a bathroom eventually swell and stop closing flat, which is why we will not specify them there.
There is nothing for mould to establish in. The surfaces are non-porous and sealed with no grain and no fabric, and anything sitting on the surface wipes straight off with a damp cloth. They will not fix an underlying ventilation problem, but they will not contribute to one either.
Not the ones we fit. Quality PVC shutters are UV-stabilised through the material rather than coated on the surface, which is what prevents the yellowing you see on cheap plastic blinds after a couple of Queensland summers. It is worth asking any supplier this question specifically, because it is where the cheap product gives itself away.
Angle the louvres downward and you get complete privacy at eye level while daylight still comes in over the top of each slat. That combination is the main reason people choose shutters over frosted glass, which gives you privacy but leaves the room permanently dim.
That is the classic case for a fixed panel with operable louvres. The frame stays put and only the louvres tilt, so you get full light and privacy control without a panel you would have to lean over the bath to reach. It is also the most economical configuration.
Waterproof PVC runs roughly $350 to $550 per square metre installed. Because bathroom windows are usually small, a single ensuite window often lands between $400 and $900, and doing all the wet areas in a house typically comes to $1,200 to $2,500.
In a white painted finish, at normal viewing distance, most people cannot tell them apart. Up close timber has a depth to the finish that PVC does not quite match, which is exactly why we put timber in living rooms and PVC in bathrooms rather than one product everywhere.
Yes, and both are common. A laundry has the same humidity problem as a bathroom, and a kitchen window over the sink cops splash and steam from the cooktop. Waterproof PVC handles both and wipes clean, which matters more over a sink than anywhere else.
They do, and chlorine and splash are no problem. If the opening is genuinely outdoors and gets direct weather and sun rather than just moisture, we would specify powder-coated aluminium instead, because it handles wide spans and direct weather better.
Typically four to six weeks, the same as the rest of the range. Panels are made to your measurements, so there is a manufacturing window. We confirm the install date at measure-up and the same team that measured does the fit.
